My cursor has been blinking for a while now—waiting for an idea to connect my mind to my fingertips so they can tap the keyboard and make the screen not so white anymore.

But the screen remains white. Because I’m just…me. Other girls have Michael Kors handbags and perfect eyeliner, while I still use my backpack as a purse and don’t know how to apply eye shadow the right way. I also can’t spell the word ‘definitely’ without autocorrect. I am not enough.

So I let the cursor blink.

But suddenly, I am reminded of the time Jesus walked on water. The day Peter grabbed the slippery railing of the boat and shouted through the thunder, “If it’s really you Jesus, then tell me to come to you!”

Jesus replied, “Come.”

So Peter swung his legs over the boat, placed his feet on the waves, and began walking on water toward Jesus.

The wind slapped his skin and the waves splattered across his cheeks, so he turned away to gasp at the storm around him. Instantly, the sea sucked him in and Peter began to drown. (Matthew 14:22-33) But he didn’t drown because the waves were too powerful or because the wind was too strong; Peter sank because he took his focus off Jesus.

Are we so different? We stare at the downpour of people who are prettier, smarter, and way better than us, and come to the cold conclusion that I am not enough. Panic seeps through our hearts and doubt rushes in. We start sinking.

But like Peter, we aren’t drowning because someone has a better body or more friends than us. No. We are drowning because we have taken our eyes off the one who says we are always enough, Jesus.

The one who was perfect so we don’t have to be. We will try and fail. We will have bad days and get crabby. We will get weak and give up. Yes, we will fall on our faces not once, not twice, but 7,482,975,023 times.

Because Jesus says, “You are enough for me.”

That is why we must focus on him. When we look at Jesus, the storm doesn’t seem so big and we don’t seem so small anymore. He can use all that we have and all that we have is enough. Our broken pieces are not ugly and useless; they are being beautifully rearranged for something much greater than before. You are enough because in the places you are weak, Jesus is strong. Bring all of your pieces to him and he will bind them together with his super glue grace.

No one can walk on water by themselves—not the smartest, prettiest, or most likable person you know. Only Jesus can, and through him we can do the impossible.

There will be days when you compare yourself to others and it feels like you are the only one who doesn’t have this life thing down yet. But when the water rises to your chin, remember that Jesus isn’t in the boat or collecting shells on the shore. He is right there in the middle of the storm with you.

“He cried, “Master, save me!” Jesus didn’t hesitate. He reached down and grabbed his hand.” Matthew 14:30-31

Don’t look at others. Don’t look at your imperfections. Don’t look at mess you’ve made. Focus on him, and you will never be alone and you will always be enough.
