Waiting sucks.

Slow walkers? Sorry, bye. Slow drivers? Adios amigo. Slow lines for coffee? UH NO. Not okay. I do not like to wait.  

I feel like God moves like slow coffee lines sometimes, just taking his sweet old time. You start thinking to yourself, “What’s going on here? I’m all alone, God. What is my purpose? My life is a mess.”

Then God just answers you with a, “Wait.” And it sucks.

God knows very well that I am impatient. He has had to deal with me bouncing my knees and sighing dramatically for 20 years. But the longer God has me wait, the more I’ve realized:

Waiting doesn’t suck nearly as much as not waiting does.

Let me tell you a little story about a man in the Bible named Job. This man was one of the richest in the world. He had everything–a beautiful wife, great kids, a huge farm, and many servants. Job loved God, but his love was about to be tested.

God allowed Satan to test Job. He killed his children, servants, and animals. His big house was blown down. When Satan was done, Job limped away with leprosy from head to toe.

Yet, through all this, Job did not blame God. Instead, he waited.

“But he knows the way that I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.” Job 23:10

There is gold in waiting. When I wait, I draw closer to God. I pray more. I start putting my faith in Him instead of my own abilities. I learn to trust. I grow a little stronger and gain a little more wisdom with each passing day. Waiting means I give God time to mold me into the woman he wants me to be so I’m prepared for the life he wants me to live.  

But if we don’t wait and rush to do things our way, we end up with nothing much better than fool’s gold–something that seems good until you look a little closer and realize that it’s not at all what you wanted.

After Job waited, God later blessed him with TWICE what he had before. He lived to be 140 with 10 more children. God doesn’t take these things lightly.

So when you get tired of waiting, remember that you want the real thing. Hey, God’s coffee line might be long sometimes, but I promise you, he’s got the brew worth waiting for.
