Dear You,
Everything is back to normal. The Christmas chaos is over, the New Year isn’t so new anymore, and the college students are back at college.
We slide back into our little routines like they’re an old pair of jeans: comfortable, yet plain. Then everyday we will wake up and put the same jeans on again. And again. Day after day.
Somedays I get tired of wearing the same jeans. Do you? Sure, they’re comfortable, but they stink after a while. The to-do list I check off everyday feels pointless: wake up, get ready, go to work, sleep. Or the school version, wait for it: wake up, get ready, go to school, sleep. And for what? So I can get a better job to do it all over again?
Deep down I know there is more to life than working and dying. There has to be. I long for something deeper. My heart aches for something more.
I’m going to be honest: It’s been months since I’ve physically opened a Bible. But if that’s you too, I really encourage you to blow the dust off the cover. There is something so reassuring about touching the words with your fingertips and seeing them underlined with ink. I circled this verse in 1 Corinthians,
“No one’s ever seen or heard anything like this, never so much as imagined anything quite like it—what God has arranged for those who love him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9 (MSG)
In The Sacred Romance (probably my favorite book of all time), authors John and Brent point out that this verse isn’t saying, “We have no clue what God is doing so don’t even try,” instead it means,“You cannot out dream God.”
Even in our wildest, brightest, and most beautiful dreams, God’s imagination is more. He has something for us that is more wild, more bright, and more beautiful.Is this the more in our hearts we are looking for? A more so wonderful that Albert Einstein can’t comprehend it. A more that overflows the bathtub with warm, bubbly water. A more that leaves $100 a tip instead of $10. A more that doesn’t say, “I like you” but shouts, “I love you with an everlasting love!”
This more goes beyond our earthly lives and into our lives in eternity, where God has a home in heaven for those who love him.
You see, we are not made for this world. Our hearts want more because the earth isn’t enough. I love how C.S. Lewis explains it,
“If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”
So then what do we do while we are here on earth? As we go about our daily routines?
We put on new jeans. God lays out a clean pair every morning so we can get dressed with a fresh hope, knowing that this world is just temporary. Our struggles are temporary. Our bodies are temporary. Our money is temporary.
God has forever in store for us, but in the meantime, we are given a new spirit to help us through each day.
As you face your schedule, know that it is not for nothing. You are a part of God’s story and no one else can take your place. We don’t know what’s on the next page but we do know it will be more than we could ever dream. Hey, it’s okay to let today be a horrible, lame, stressful, intense, or cry-when-your-face-hits-the-pillow kind of day. You’ve got a brand new one tomorrow.
Plus, you’ll look great in those jeans (;

A million-bajillion thank you’s for reading my letter series! I’ve absolutely loved writing letters to you all! (It’s honestly kept me sane over J-Term). College has started back up, but I am going to keep blogging as best as I can. Don’t forget to lean on God when the weight of this world is too much. Sending a hug across the internet to you! xoxoxo
